How to register a motorcycle without papers

One of the most common cases when we start restoring a motorcycle is to discover that it is on temporary leave, permanent leave or that it has fewer papers than a hare.

Don't worry, we are going to explain step by step what you have to do to register a motorcycle without papers.

If you have made reforms to your motorcycle that you want to homologate , click on the previous link. If what you are interested in is registering a motorcycle as historic , we will tell you about it here.

How can I find out what condition my motorcycle is in?

Well yes, it is important to start here. A priori, we can find that the motorcycle is discharged, temporarily discharged, permanently discharged or seized.

If the motorcycle is repossessed, it cannot be transferred until the embargo is lifted.

In the rest of the cases, we can register it.

To determine what situation your motorcycle is in, you need at least the license plate number or the frame number . This can greatly complicate the rehabilitation of a moped, since until a few years ago, they did not have a license plate.

With any of these data, you can make an appointment at your nearest DGT or do it online . It is really simple. You can opt for a free simple report , in which they tell you if there is any incident, or a complete report , in which their technical data, owner, municipality, ITV history, loads, kilometers, etc. are detailed.

So far easy, right?

Register a motorcycle in temporary withdrawal

This is the simplest case, since you will simply have to go to the town hall to notify that you want to re-register your motorcycle and pay the road tax.

Once you have passed the ITV (you have no choice but to take it by crane or van, remember that it cannot circulate), you will have to go to the DGT and deliver the vehicle registration form in a situation of temporary leave .

The procedure costs € 8.5 . You have to be the owner of the vehicle or have a signed authorization from it. Below we explain what to do if we don't even know who the owner is.

Register a motorcycle in definitive deregistration

In this case the paperwork is not very different, yes, much more expensive. For a motorcycle it will cost you € 97.80 and for a moped € 27.30 .

The form in this case is the Vehicle Rehabilitation form , which you must submit to the DGT. Later you must regularize the road tax at the town hall and pass the ITV (where they will give you the technical sheet). With the ITV passed, you will have to return to the DGT to request the circulation permit.

There is only one case in which you will not be able to register your motorcycle: if it was permanently decommissioned due to destruction after 02/13/2004. In this case, a certificate of destruction of the vehicle had to be issued, which makes its rehabilitation impossible. For the rest of the cases you are in luck.

You have to be the owner of the vehicle to do this procedure, or have a signed authorization.

What if I don't even know who the owner is?

It is very common, in very old motorcycles, that we do not know the owner of the vehicle, or that they have died. This is the case of motorcycles that have belonged to our grandparents or parents, and that have slept their last forgotten years under a thick layer of dust. Again, getting a report on the bike may be the first option.

In this case, it is obvious that it will not be easy for us to get a signed sales contract and a photocopy of the DNI (which is what they will ask us for any procedure in the DGT).

Do not worry, to solve this situation we have the Act of Demonstrations .

It is a document that will be issued by a notary, to which we must go with two witnesses who attest that the motorcycle has been ours for the last 2 years. With this notarial document, we can prove the ownership of the motorcycle in traffic. It has a cost of about € 50 .

Register an old moped

As we have seen before, registering a moped without a license plate can be very complicated, it can even be impossible.

If the moped has a traffic license , we just have to follow the steps in the previous sections.

If your moped has a city hall license plate , it is as if it did not have a license plate. In the mid-90s they changed all the license plates and gave a deadline for passing the town hall license plates to national traffic license plates. If the deadline passed, the bike could only be registered as historic .

If you do not have the license plate you can doubt if your registration was local or national. In this case, if we have all the data of the legal owner of the moped (that is, the one that appears in the registry), we can go to the town hall where the moped was registered, and ask that they issue us a report (in case we are lucky and has national registration).

If we do not get this information, I am afraid that registering an old moped without papers will be impossible.
