Maintenance-free battery activation and charging

In the previous article, we saw the activation of batteries with maintenance. Today is the turn of maintenance-free batteries. The maintenance-free batteries are sealed batteries modern where we can not fill electrolytes when locked.

How to activate batteries with maintenance

To activate it once acquired, we will remove the battery from its packaging and unseal the battery seal to be able to introduce the electrolyte inside.

We will insert the electrolyte cartridge provided by the manufacturer into the battery and let the battery fill with electrolyte. We will keep the lid that incorporates the electrolyte cartridge since this will serve to cover the battery when it is activated. We must not puncture the electrolyte cartridge from its back to cause air to enter and force its emptying inside the battery, as this could cause the electrolyte to escape violently, causing injuries as it is corrosive.

nce the battery is charged with the electrolyte, we will let it rest uncovered for a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes. Once the rest time has elapsed, we will cover the battery with the cover that came with the electrolyte cartridge, pressing it with our fingers to ensure that the cover is completely flush with the upper surface of the battery.

The majority of current batteries correspond to those of this type, which are activated only once with electrolyte and are completely maintenance-free due to their internal construction that does not require distilled water recharging.

We will never refill a battery without maintenance. These are sealed after activation and for no reason should they be opened. If we open it or add distilled water to its glasses we can cause its breakdown and destruction.

Once closed, we will charge the battery for the time set by the manufacturer, approximately 3 to 8 hours of charging, leaving the battery ready for assembly. Most manufacturers indicate that it is not necessary to charge this type of battery once activated, since they already have more than 50% charge with the activation process.

To charge it, we will connect the battery to an automatic electronic type charger respecting the polarity (positive from the battery to positive from the charger, and negative from the battery to negative from charger) and, later, we will connect the charger to the electric current to avoid crossovers. at the time of connection. The use of adjustable chargers in this type of battery is not recommended, as they can damage them.

How to check the status and charge of a motorcycle battery?

To check the status and charge of a battery that is already installed, we will turn the ignition on the motorcycle to OFF and locate the battery on the motorcycle, using the information provided by the manufacturer in the user manual.

We will disconnect the negative terminal of the motorcycle, eliminating the motorcycle chassis as ground, and later we will disconnect the positive terminal of the battery and extract it from the motorcycle. Carrying out this operation correctly is very important in modern motorcycles since an unwanted short circuit could cause the erasure of the memory of your control unit and damage to its electronic components.

To check the battery voltage, connect the red probe of the tester to the terminal marked with a “V” , and the black probe of the tester to the terminal marked with “COM” , selecting the scale at 20 volts DCV.

If the tester reading is above 12.8 volts, it shows that the battery is charged. If the reading is between 1 2.4 and 12.8 volts, it shows that the battery is half charged. A reading below 12.4 volts shows the battery is low on charge and will need to be recharged. If we frequently encounter this problem on the motorcycle, it may be an indication that we have a problem with the battery charging system or that the battery is faulty.

The electronic chargers (automatic)They tend to disconnect when the battery is fully charged, which will eliminate being aware of the battery in its charging process. Once charged, we will disconnect the charger from the electrical current and, later, we will disconnect the battery from the charger. If the battery terminals are sulfated, we will proceed to clean them with water. We will install the battery in the motorcycle, first connecting the positive terminal and then the negative terminal to avoid crossings, fixing the battery with a rubber or a cover depending on the motorcycle model. Some manufacturers advise protecting the terminals with a specific product to avoid sulphation, so we must consult the user manual for a correct assembly and protection of the battery.
