10 tips to ride a motorcycle and not die trying

The use of the motorcycle is going through one of its best moments, especially in Europe, since the ease of driving and the agility to get around the city are being highly valued. In the last ten years, motorcycle use has doubled in some countries of the Old Continent, to such an extent that in Barcelona, Spain, there is already one motorcycle for every two cars. In Asia, there is even the Guinness Record for the highest number of motorcycles per inhabitant; in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, there are 6 million motorcycles, 500 thousand cars ... and only 7 million inhabitants. For Mexico, the story is not that different either, as there are more and more motorcyclists on the streets.

Riding a motorcycle is not only more practical for driving in busy cities, it is also an exciting experience. If you've ever done it, you'll agree that despite being a lot of fun, it requires more concentration than driving a car. Whether you are an experienced motorcyclist or a novice who does not care to drive an Italika RT200 than a BMW R 1200 GS, it is important that you take into account the following tips so that you do not have a bad time due to an unforeseen event.

1. Take a basic driving course. Maybe learning to ride a bike did not require great skills, but a motorcycle is not that easy to tame. It is always good to have an instructor tell you what you can do and how you should do it. Similarly, if you are just starting out, it is recommended to start with a small or medium motorized motorcycle.

2. Let your focus turn on! You've probably driven a car and, as you've noticed, there are blind spots. If you sometimes do not see cars when changing lanes, imagine if you will see a motorcycle that is even smaller. To make yourself more visible, it is recommended to turn on your lights; in case it rains, turning on the flashers is a good idea.

3. Wear the right equipment. Playing ice hockey and not wearing elbow pads, knee pads or helmet is a real risk, isn't riding a motorcycle without protection? If you usually move around the city, you should at least wear a helmet, gloves to avoid scratches on your hands, a protective jacket and ankle-length boots. On the road, the helmet must be foldable, the jacket must have protection on the shoulders, back and elbows, the pants must have hip and knee protection, and the boots must be special for motorcyclists.

4. Everything with measure. We already know that doing wheelies with the motorcycle shows power, like in the movies, but if you are not yet an expert, you should be careful when using the accelerator; the front tire can lift and the rear tire lose grip, causing an accident.

5. Braking techniques. If you must brake at less than 30 km / h, it is recommended to do it with the rear wheel, this will allow you to control the motorcycle better; at higher speeds, it is not recommended to brake suddenly, but to do it little by little with both brakes.

6. Motorists are not fortune-tellers. Good if driving a car allows you to see the future, but it doesn't ... unless it's the DeLorean from Back to the Future. Avoid zigzagging between cars and try to always walk in a straight line; If you drive in extreme left or right lanes, take into account that if a car turns, it probably has not seen you and blocks your way.

7. Avoid traveling after heavy vehicles. Movies like Final Destination have made it clear to us that if you travel behind a cargo vehicle, you can suffer fatal accidents; Regardless of whether the load falls on you, the fact of traveling after a truck prevents you from seeing the road and, if there is a sudden maneuver in front, you will not be able to react in time.

8. Keep your distance. The distance from a car should always be at least 2 seconds. Remember that if the car stops hard, you should have enough time to avoid it.

9. Identify poorly adherent terrain. Metal platforms and painted concrete are often dangerous surfaces, especially if they are wet. Remember that dangerous maneuvers on low-grip terrain lead to unforeseen reactions.

10. Give the rulebook a read. There are traffic laws for motorcycles. By knowing them, you will know what you can do and what not; In addition, you will be prepared in case a police officer wants to be clever.
