Motorcycles are highly exposed to the elements that can rust them, especially in cities where there is a lot of rain, salinity or dirt.
One of the most exposed pieces is the gas tank; As it is sealed by its own lid, many believe there is no risk or exposure to contaminants. This is a serious mistake that can destroy many of the motorcycle's engine systems and all the effort that we have put into maintaining it .
Why does the gas tank rust?
The fuel itself is made up of corrosive elements, which by sticking to the internal surfaces of the fuel tank cause corrosion that oxidizes the material. Over time, some contaminants can come off and clog the carburetor , or even worse: enter the motorcycle's combustion chamber and scratch the cylinder liners or break a seal, which would be fatal to the engine.
As we have already said in previous articles , rust is formed thanks to moisture particles that, when combined with oxygen in the environment and with a metallic surface, react chemically, regardless of whether it is exposed to the sun's rays. Simply because of the heat it can generate, it is enough to generate said oxidation.
How to avoid oxidation?
One of the most effective ways to prevent oxidation inside the motorcycle's gasoline tank is to add a fuel additive every 5 or 6 tanks , to ensure that the detergent effect of gasoline additives does not allow the particles of Water from gasoline adhering to the inside of the tank.
On most occasions when you take your motorcycle into service, your caretaker will add an anti-corrosion additive to prevent oxidation on the inside of the fuel tank , however this tragedy can happen anyway.
How to repair oxidation in the fuel tank?
You must address the problem immediately, to prevent fragments of the rusty metal from circulating through the gasoline lines , and plugging them, or reaching your engine.
It takes approximately 250 milliliters of Loosen All, and small Pomex-type stones. Once you have removed the tank from the motorcycle and made sure that it no longer contains any fuel, pour the multipurpose lubricant into the tank, covering the outlet lines with a finger; also introduces pomex stones. Shake the fuel tank vigorously to force the stones to rub against its walls and remove any existing rust. Repeat this process as many times as necessary.
Rinse the tank with a generous amount of gasoline until you notice that it no longer turns brown. Assemble the entire system again and fill the tank, this time adding a gasoline additive.
Your motorcycle will never be unprotected if you follow all the advice we have for you in this league; In addition, we can give you many recommendations to facilitate the maintenance of the motorcycle.
